Mississippi Qui Tam Whistleblower Case Example:
In January 2001, Rush Health Systems and three of its affiliates agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a Federal qui tam lawsuit filed in Mississippi, that alleged the companies submitted Medicare claims using provider numbers of physicians who did not actually provide the services.

In February 2000, Charter Behavior Health Systems agreed to pay $600,000.00 to settle a Federal qui tam lawsuit filed in Mississippi, that alleged the company submitted false claims for psychiatric services to Medicare and Medicaid. The false claims involved upcoding.

The purpose of the Qui tam provisions of the Federal False Claims Act is to encourage private individuals who are aware of fraud being perpetrated against the government to bring such information forward.
