Qui Tam Whistleblower Case Example:
In
April, 2004, Highmark, Inc., an insurance company and Medicare
contractor, agreed to pay the United States $1.5 million to
settle a False Claims Act case that alleged that an affiliate
of Highmark tampered with and altered Medicare files and claims
information in an attempt to improve scores on Medicare evaluations
of the affiliate's performance during the years 1992-1994.

purpose of the Qui tam provisions of the Federal False
Claims Act is to encourage private individuals who are
aware of
fraud
being perpetrated against the government to bring such
information forward.
